I recommend you spend at least two minutes on each question, coming up with and writing down at least one answer – or as many answers as you can think of. Seriously – time yourself. Two minutes is longer than you think! I would also recommend doing this over several sittings to get your maximum memory retrieval going – even if it takes a couple of days, it’ll be worth it.

Like Jason, look for activities where you’ve taken a creative approach or dealt with a challenge as you plan your Common Application essay.
The first time I ever advised a student on their college application essay, I worked with a quiet student, a guy who disappeared into the back of his classes. He wrote his essay about building a treehouse with his best friend. Jason’s story revealed the many facets of his character: his creativity, his expert planning, his love of nature and building, and the comical things that guys say to one another when they are just hanging out. That was the first time I saw how application essays can bring a student to life and help them outwit the college admissions numbers game.

It’s true: the college admission process is tougher than ever. Basically every student you’ll be up against has done some sort of community service. Everyone has some sport or musical instrument or other extracurricular in which they excel. Tons of kids work a part-time job in addition to all their other responsibilities. It’s hard to find something you did in high school that will make you unique in a big applicant pool. This is not to discount the work you’ve done; it’s just to say that everyone is writing similar essays about similar things.
In the college admission process, it can be easy to get caught up in trying to come off as the “perfect” candidate. You’ve worked so hard to get perfect grades, perfect SAT or ACT scores, perfect extracurricular activities—you get the picture. However, here’s a little-known secret about college applications: perfect is boring. The people in admission offices reading your essays read about “perfect” all day. Your essay is the time to spice up your application.

how to write an analytical paper for history

how to write an analytical paper for history

How to write an analytical paper for history
Of course, you can use different ways to organize the outline, but no matter how you decided to make it, your analytical work must have three important parts: an introduction, body part, and conclusion. A student can make it a 3 or 5-paragraph essay. Digging deeper, you will obtain a similar template:
Knowing how to write an analytical essay is a key to writing many other types of academic assignments: from argumentative to synthesis essay. It may be a thorny way. Having an action plan called an analysis paper outline, credible sources, and reliable help by your side will help to overcome the difficulties with any homework assignment. Keep in mind that an analytical essay is not a summary! It is the primary thing a student should know when answering the question, “What is an analytical paper?”

Alexander the Great was a successful ruler because he created long lasting effects on cultures that still continue to this day [jr1] .
[jr3] The writer defines “Hellenistic Society.” This further explains the historical detail to the reader.

Write your introduction: The introduction outlines how you intend to present your analysis. It also presents a basic map for the essay that indicates how you will prove your argument. The most important component of the introduction is your thesis statement, which must be presented in clear and concise language.
The purpose of an analytical history paper is to provide an argument that proves a specific thesis. This argument should demonstrate insight by employing primary and secondary sources to prove the essay’s basic claim. The success of an analytical history paper rests on the author’s ability to present information in a clear and concise manner so that the reader may easily follow the analysis.

The advice above is relevant to coursework essays. It’s different in exams, where time is limited. But even here, you should take time out to do some thinking. Examiners look for quality rather than quantity, and brevity makes relevance doubly important. If you get into the habit of thinking about the key issues in your course, rather than just absorbing whatever you are told or read, you will probably find you’ve already considered whatever issues examiners pinpoint in exams.
A good essay, especially one that seems to have been effortlessly composed, has often been revised several times; and the best students are those who are most selfcritical. Get into the habit of criticising your own first drafts, and never be satisfied with second-best efforts. Also, take account of the feedback you get from teachers. Don’t just look at the mark your essay gets; read the comments carefully. If teachers don’t advise how to do even better next time, they are not doing their job properly.

Your reader’s blueprint for reading:

  • Helps you determine your focus and clarify your ideas.
  • Provides a “hook” on which you can “hang” your topic sentences.
  • Can (and should) be revised as you further refine your evidence and arguments. New evidence often requires you to change your thesis.
  • Gives your paper a unified structure and point.

Although the reader will have access to the prompt you received, your essay should stand on its own, making clear the assignment you were given and your response to it. Start your essay by clearly restating the issue you were assigned, followed by a sentence stating your position on that assignment–that is, your thesis. Next, introduce the specific reasons or examples you plan to provide in each of the next three paragraphs, one sentence for each of the forthcoming paragraphs.
Here’s how to structure each paragraph in your template (taken from our GRE study guide):

Some common introductory phrases for purpose statements include:
Critique: too vague and broad. No clear expectation of what the reader will learn. Questions: What specific changes in corporate America will be described? What types of changes? What aspects of corporate America will be discussed? Will this paper also discuss the effects of these changes?

Declearative essay format template

  • Shows the reader that you have proved your thesis
  • Summarizes the points in your essay
  • It demonstrates to the reader that you have accomplished what you set out to do
  • Shows your readers why this paper was important, meaningful and useful because it makes a memorable statement about the topic that will convince the reader to think or act differently
  • Includes a call to action in a sentence or two that states the change you have argued for in the essay
  • It gives the essay a sense of closure and completeness

1. Always start with a Grabber. Grabbers can be leads, hooks, quotations, wow facts, or a very short story or anecdote. The Grabber will show your voice and personality. You want to make your paper or presentation interesting and lively. You want your reader/audience to be interested in what you have discovered and get excited about what they will learn through reading your essay or listening to your presentation.

After you’ve landed on a satisfactory topic, your next step will be to solidify the position you would like to take and write a clear and succinct thesis statement which will lay the foundation for the rest of your paper.
An example of a thesis statement outlining your position might look like this:

Tip: Outlines can be very detailed or very general, but the more detail you have the farther you’ll get toward writing your paper. Here’s an example. A paper of 12 pages (about 4,500 words) might have four major topics or points, represented by roman numerals (I – IV) in the outline. This would mean each point would represent about three pages of the final paper. These three pages will include background information, multiple sources, different pieces of evidence and explanation supporting that point, and often a brief description of alternative views and an explanation of why those views are not so convincing. Smaller points supporting each of the main points might then take up a single page, or 2 – 3 paragraphs—again with evidence, explanation, alternative views and so on. Finally, even smaller points under these might correspond to individual paragraphs in the final draft.

A sentence outline does all of this, plus it shows exactly what you will say about each mini-topic. Each sentence, instead of simply identifying a mini-topic, is like a mini-thesis statement about that mini-topic. It expresses the specific and complete idea that that section of the paper will cover as part of proving the overall thesis.

why use quotations in essays

why use quotations in essays

Any handbook used in Rhetoric or English courses will give you an acceptable format for incorporating quotations into your writing and punctuating them correctly. The MLA and APA handbooks provide guidance as well.

  • According to the Code on Campus Affairs, “No absence from class is excused.”

If you need to alter or replace text from the original, enclose the added text within square brackets. You may, for example, need to alter text to ensure that pronouns agree with their antecedents. Do not write,
Vary the way you introduce quotations to avoid sounding monotonous. But never sacrifice precision of phrasing for the sake of variety.

Why use quotations in essays
If the quotation does not meet a few of these objectives, then it is of little value. Merely stuffing a quotation into your essay can do more harm than good.
A good quotation should do one or more of the following:

Why use quotations in essays
The things they carried were largely determined by necessity. Among the necessities or near-necessities were P-38 can openers, pocket knives, heat tabs, wristwatches, dog tags, mosquito repellent, chewing gum, candy cigarettes, salt tablets, packets of Kool-Aid, lighters, matches, sewing kits, Military Payment Certificates, C rations, and two or three canteens of water.” (O’Brien 2)

Variation: When you’re citing two or more paragraphs, you must use block quotes, even if the passage you want to quote is less than four lines long. You should indent the first line of each paragraph an extra quarter inch. Then, use ellipses (…) at the end of one paragraph to transition to the next.

Why use quotations in essays

  • Double indent the entire quote one inch on the left only. (Hit the Increase Indent button twice.)
  • Delete quotation marks from around the quotation.
  • Put the final punctuation before the citation. (In non-block quotes, a period goes after the citation.)

Whether paraphrasing or quoting, remember to cite. Also remember to introduce sources. The first time you use a source in a paper, it can be helpful to the reader if you identify the source (and not just in parenthetical citation). In some cases the source that should be identified is someone other than the author. In the example below, the expert is not the author but the person about whom the author is writing:

The academic world is sometimes a cruel place — especially when deadlines for assignments get tighter and the number of your tasks grows unstoppably. You may realize that it is to your advantage to pay for your academic papers. You might stay up all night, forget to eat and hope to manage all the assignments on time, forgetting about your health. All you can count on is having not-that-severe brain damage from the ever-present pressure of the syllabus.
Eventually, you will have neither energy nor desire to enjoy your life and continue based on the single idea that you have to keep writing. The main focus of this paper will be to address the ethical issues and standards in regard to abortion. Roe v. Wade details what is legal and illegal regarding abortion, but it does not lay out exactly what an abortion is. Merriam-Webster defines abortion as “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus. ” This definition is very to the point as far as what is considered an abortion and the end result of abortion.
In 2007 the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist (AGOG) issued an opinion that motivated the Bush Administration to establish written Federal regulations to ensure that there was a “protection” for a healthcare provider’s right to object to involvement in abortions. These regulations were soon redacted by the Obama Administration in 2009. It determined that the regulations were unnecessary, because conscience law were already upheld within the U. S. Health care laws.

Honoring the principle of autonomy means that the health care provider respects a client’s right to make decisions even when those choices seem to them not to be in the client’s best interest. It also means treating others with consideration (Tabrizi, 2003).In a health care setting this principle is violated, for example, when a nurse disregards client’s subjective accounts of their symptoms. Finally respect for autonomy means that people should not be treated as an impersonal source of knowledge or training. This principle comes into play, for example, in the requirement that clients provide informed consent before tests, procedures, research, or being a teaching subject can be carried out (El-Toukhy and Braude , 2008).
The client’s values and decisions are influenced by a variety of factors such as family support, previous experience with health care situations, the meaning of illness to the person and her personal goals (Tabrizi, 2003).

numerous ethical issues that can develop in labor and delivery whether this issue influences the mother, baby, or both. In healthcare, it is an obligation for the provider to give ideal care, treatment, and prevent harm to patients while making ethical choices. Here and there, these choices aren ‘t highly contrasting and providers must outweigh benefits versus harm in order to give the best care possible for mother and baby. One case of an ethical issues that emerges in obstetrics is late abortion in
Abortion is an ethical issue that has generated heated debates for the past several years. Abortion is the practice of terminating a pregnancy resulting, or closely followed by, the death of the human fetus (Shakir and Moreno-Ruiz). Also, abortion means an early ending of pregnancy, which may happen on its own (miscarriage or spontaneous abortion), or when women choose to end pregnancy by taking certain medications or surgically done (“Abortion Topic Overview”). good reasons for adopting a doctrine of the equality of murder. Suppose that we tried to estimate the seriousness of a crime of murder by appraising the value of the FLO of which the victim had been deprived. How would one go about doing this? In they first place, one would be confronted by the old problem of interpersonal comparisons of utility. Second place, estimation of the value of a would involve putting oneself, not into the shoes of the victim at the time she was killed, but rather into the shoes the victim would have worn had the victim survived, and then estimating from that perspective the worth of that person’s future. This task difficult, if not impossible. Accordingly, there are reasons to adopt a convention that murders equally wrong.
Accordingly, we can see that a contractarian defense of the pro-choice personhood syllogism fails. The problem arises because the contractarian cannot account for our duties to individuals who are not persons, whether these individuals are animals or infants. Because the pro-choicer wishes to adopt a narrow criterion for the right to life so that fetuses will not be included, the scope of her major premise is too narrow. Her problem is the opposite of the problem the classic opponent of abortion faces.
